BUSING

With the new school year comes many changes. One of these is the busing of students to school. Everyone knows which bus their child should be riding by now, but if you are unsure, please call the Iqaluit District Education Authority office at 979-5314 for information.

PLEASE:

Ensure that your child is waiting for the bus five minutes before the expected arrival time. Remember, with traffic and weather conditions, we cannot give an exact arrival time. Each route takes the bus between 8-12 minutes to complete, so children should not have to wait longer than 10-15 minutes for their bus.

Make sure your children know what to do if they miss the bus: come back home or to a neighbour’s house if both parents work; or if at school, report to a teacher right away.

During the cold weather, please ensure that your children are dressed warmly with hats, mitts, scarves and boots, as well as their parkas. Also, make sure your children are visible when it is dark. Use retro-reflective tape on their parkas and avoid dark colours.

Make sure your children know which bus to take and tell them to ask a teacher in the school yard if they are unsure. At lunch and after school, bus students should go directly to the line-up for their bus.

BEHAVIOUR AND DISCIPLINE

We are asking parents to remind their children of school bus safety rules and bus courtesy.

RULES:

Children must remain seated on the bus until the bus comes to a FULL stop. Pushing and horseplay on the bus is dangerous to other children and also distracting to the driver. The driver cannot be expected to be watching what the children are doing and watching the road at the same time. Please reinforce the bus safety rules with your children to help keep everyone safe.

At the bus stop, wait well away from the roadway, and stay well back until the bus has come to a FULL stop and the door opens. Enter the bus one at a time, with no pushing or shoving.

Bus drivers are required to fill out Bus Behaviour Reports or Incident Reports for more serious problems on the bus. If the school receives a negative report on any of the children, disciplinary action will be considered and your child could lose the right to use the bus. Remember, riding the bus is a privilege, and misbehaviour on the bus could lead to the loss of this privilege.
