IQALUIT DISTRICT EDUCATION AUTHORITY (IDEA)

INFORMATION

There are 7 members of the IDEA.

The election of the members is held in conjunction with municipal elections every three years.

The next municipal election is November 2006.

 

 

 

 

 

 

MISSION STATEMENT

The Iqaluit District Education Authority, in partnership with the community, shall strive to provide an inclusive educational environment that will assist our children in achieving their full academic and personal potential.

GOALS

 Within the next two years, the IDEA will focus on, and be advocates for:

  • Improving the level of support for at-risk students

  • Increasing the availability of Inuktitut in our schools

  • Undertaking research and collecting data, in an effort to inform ourselves on the performance of our schools

In addition to these three core areas of focus the IDEA will strive to see improvements in the following areas:

  • Increasing the funding available to our schools

  • Ensuring our schools are providing all students with: 1) an understanding of their important role as citizens, 2) an understanding of their responsibility for their own actions, 3) a respect for the ideas and beliefs of others,  and 4) an understanding of social justice and human rights.

  • Continually evaluating and developing standards to improve our school environment and facilities

  • Raising the profile of the IDEA’s role in improving public education in Iqaluit

  • Increasing parent involvement within the schools

ROLE OF THE IQALUIT DISTRICT EDUCATION AUTHORITY (IDEA)

 

IDEA members are responsible for the operation of the public schools in Iqaluit. They are elected by the residents of Iqaluit, in accordance with the NWT Education Act, at municipal elections held every 3 years.

Some of the IDEA responsibilities are:

To act as representatives of the parents and community and consider their expectations.

To consider the interests of the children and students in all decisions made by the IDEA.

To establish and monitor policies based on the IDEA’s aims, goals, and objectives, within the confines of educational and territorial policies.

To value and encourage community involvement in educational matters.

To be informed of local, territorial and national education issues and developments.

To attend all regular and special committee meetings as required.

To be familiar with, and contribute, items contained on the agenda, and actively participate in discussions and decision making.

To show respect and courtesy toward other members.

To respect the rights of other members to express their opinions freely and without constraint on matters related to their role on the IDEA.

 To show thoughtful consideration in analysing, commenting and making judgements on, proposals brought to the meetings.

To support the decisions of the IDEA and see to their implementation.

To respect all regulations, policies and procedures adopted by the IDEA.

To establish a budget and supervise its implementation.

To provide, equip and maintain schools.

IDEA BULLETIN

In September 2004, the IDEA launched their newsletter - the BULLETIN - to keep parents and the community informed as to what the IDEA was doing for education in Iqaluit.

The Bulletin is presently being released three times during the school year: in the fall, winter, and spring.
